A hotel and casino set inside the pavilions France and Québec built for the world's fair of 1967
Casinos are for adults only. In Canada the minimum age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Québec; elsewhere it depends on where you are.
The interior is cut into many short levels joined by stairs and escalators, so a floor rarely runs far before it steps. The outer wall of the French pavilion is a screen of aluminium fins, angled so that daylight arrives sideways and in strips. Ceilings are high above the open wells.
Two buildings from Expo 67 make up the complex. The French pavilion, a tall block sheathed in aluminium, was joined to the smaller Québec pavilion when the site was converted at the start of the 1990s, and further work has been done since. The plan follows the original exhibition halls rather than a standard hotel layout, which is why the levels are shallow and the circulation is vertical.
The site is on Île Notre-Dame, an artificial island made for the fair in the middle of the St Lawrence, inside Parc Jean-Drapeau. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve runs around the same island and the rowing basin lies beside it. From the city bank the aluminium block reads as a bright shape standing above open water and parkland.
