Very small cabin rooms fitted into a 1916 building that was put up as a residence for young men
A room is built around the bed and little else: a fitted mattress, a shelf that works as a desk, hooks, a mirror and a socket within reach. Some rooms carry a second bunk above the first, reached by a short ladder. Many rooms use shared bathrooms on the corridor, and the fittings are chosen to fold flat or hang.
The building on East 39th Street dates from 1916 and was built as a YMCA residence, which is why the original rooms were small and the shared spaces were large. The conversion kept that logic: the sleeping rooms stayed compact and the money went into the ground floor and the roof. The rooftop bar sits under vaulted brickwork left from the older structure, and the street facade keeps its brick and stone detail.
The address is in Murray Hill, on the east side of Midtown Manhattan, on a side street rather than an avenue. Grand Central Terminal is a few blocks north-west and the tunnel approaches to Queens run below the neighbourhood. The block is residential in character, with low brick buildings between the taller towers of the district.
