The old head office of the Holland America Line, standing at the head of its own pier in Rotterdam
Rooms keep the tall office windows and the deep frames that go with them, so the light arrives in vertical strips. Panelled doors, brass handles and dark woodwork stayed in place through the conversion. The former boardroom keeps its long table and its stained glass, and the tiled floor of the ground level is the original one.
The building went up between 1901 and 1917 as the head office of the Holland America Line, whose ships left from the quay in front of it for New York. Two slim towers with copper caps stand at the corners, and the brick facade carries stone dressings in the style of the period. The company left in 1977, and after years of vacancy the offices were turned into a hotel that opened in 1993.
The building sits at the tip of the Wilhelminapier in Kop van Zuid, with water on three sides and the Erasmus Bridge crossing to the north bank. Newer towers stand behind it along the pier, which makes the low brick block easy to pick out. A water taxi crosses the Nieuwe Maas from the older side of the city.
