Guest rooms in the Prellerhaus studio block of 1926, each with the balcony that belongs to it
A room here is a square studio of about twenty square metres. One wall is mostly window and a door onto a balcony wide enough for a chair. The fittings are plain: a steel-framed bed, a desk, a washbasin in the corner, hooks and a shelf. Bathrooms are shared along the corridor, as they were for the students.
Walter Gropius designed the school building in 1925 and 1926, and the studio block called Prellerhaus is the tall wing at its south-east corner, with twenty-eight studios stacked over five floors and their balconies stepped down the facade. The workshop wing next to it carries the glass curtain wall that most photographs show. The complex is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and the foundation that runs it lets the studio floors to visitors.
The building stands on Gropiusallee in Dessau-Roßlau, in Saxony-Anhalt, on the edge of the town centre rather than in it. Housing blocks and open lawns surround it, and the Masters' Houses stand a short walk north along the same avenue. From the road the glass wall reads as a single flat sheet with the name written across it.
